Izinki Black and White by Zilungile Hanise is part of the Ilifa (Inheritance/Legacy) collection. Inspired by her ancestral home, a place of belonging for four generations. The piece explores pattern, structure, and rhythm through bold, monochrome design. “Izinki,” meaning “bricks” in isiXhosa, refers to the physical foundations of home and community. The black and white palette sharpens the focus on form, allowing the deconstructed architectural elements to speak clearly and directly. As with all works in the collection, the use of two-tones draws from a longstanding tradition of how houses are painted in her village, a detail that grounds her work in memory and lived experience. Izinki is both graphic and deeply personal, blending cultural reference with contemporary clarity.
